How to Know if ChatGPT Recommends Your Brand

To know whether ChatGPT recommends your brand, test discovery and comparison prompts that do not force the brand into the question. Then check whether the answer presents the brand as a suitable option, where it appears among alternatives, and whether the result holds up across repeated runs and other assistants.

Step 1: Use prompts that allow absence

Questions such as "What are the best tools for this use case?" are more informative than "Is this brand good?" The first measures discovery; the second asks ChatGPT to discuss an entity already supplied by the user.

Step 2: Distinguish mention from recommendation

  • Is the brand presented as an option for the stated need?
  • Is it near the beginning or buried after alternatives?
  • Is the description positive, neutral, or cautionary?

Step 3: Repeat the test

Run each prompt several times, ideally on different days. One recommendation can be a fluke; a recommendation that appears in most runs is a pattern.

Step 4: Check who is recommended instead

Note every competitor ChatGPT names. If the same few brands keep appearing where you don't, those are the brands to study, along with the sources the answer cites.

Step 5: Compare with other assistants

Ask the same questions in Claude and Gemini. When multiple assistants independently name your brand, the recommendation is more durable than a single engine's answer.

Run the test in 30 seconds

GeoSurfaced's free check runs a real category question against Gemini and shows whether your product or an alternative appears, with no signup. To track answers over time, start a 14-day free trial on Gemini; a prepaid balance adds ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if ChatGPT recommends my brand?

Ask category and comparison questions that don't include your brand name, repeat them several times, and check whether your brand is presented as a suitable option and where it appears among alternatives.

Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my brand?

Common reasons are limited independent coverage, inconsistent facts across the web, unclear positioning on your own pages, or competitors with stronger presence on the sources ChatGPT relies on.
